Bushara Island 29th July - 30th July
We were staying on a small island in tents. Was this our chance to finally rough it in Uganda? Erm...no. Fortunately for us, our restful stay on Bushara after the mayhem of the children's mission was, once again, rather more comfortable than we'd expected. (Note: the music in the background is specially for Trevor).
The island was surrounded by Lake Bunyoni, and took about fifteen minutes to walk all the way round. There was a large population of birds on the island, as well as insects and lizards. The sound of the bird chatter during the day, and the insects during the night, was very, very loud.
As well as swimming in the lake, a group of us also hired a dug-out canoe for an hour, with the intention of paddling round the island. Needless to say, we went round and round in circles for about half an hour, and after various power struggles over the oars, the majority of the group voted to do the dignified thing. We marooned the boat in some reeds on the shore and went to get help.
The tents had twin beds, a table and chairs, a mini wardrobe, a proper floor, and best of all, the walls were mosquito proof.
There was an ensuite toilet and shower round the back of the tent - the shower was outside, and you had to book hot water for the drum in advance. And the staff brought pre-ordered breakfast down to the tent in the morning.
My old girl guide leader would've had a fit.
Coming back from Bushara on a motor boat. (We had the option to paddle back, but the wounds from world war three that morning were still sore, so we declined).
The map we were given of the island.
